MOT testing
By Keith Shephard, 11/11/23
Hi folks, Sorry, but this is going to be a long one. First of all let me explain that I took my VW Transporter T5/T32 into Whitings Garage last year for a class 7 MOT. At the time it was on a private plate which has now been transferred to another vehicle that I bought in March. But, the VW Transporter is exactly the same as when I took to them last year - albeit, back on the original number plate. Whitings failed my van miserably in November 2023 due to alleged "modifications" and I am now having to go through an MOT appeal process. That said, I have owned this vehicle since May 2017 and have never made any modifications (engine-wise or mechanically) of any kind during that period. So, let's imagine a little scenario. Let's say that I was thinking of buying this van last year, but I say to to the seller that I'm going to take it to Whitings Garage to get an MOT before parting with £8,000 (which is about what it's worth) and they pass it with just a few advisories. Job done, I buy the van and then I take it back to Whitings Garage again the following year for another MOT. The van is then tested by the same person, at the same garage who tested it the year before and he virtually condemns it saying that all this stuff has been modified making the van effectively worthless! Explain that to me Mr S.A. Whiting? Stuart (the MOT tester in question) states these nonsense modifications as "obvious". Well, Stuart they weren't obvious to you last year and they weren't obvious to all the different testers that had passed the vehicle in the years before you. I tried to to explain all this to you on the day Stuart, but you wouldn't get off your high-horse. You also said the van had been remapped which might explain all the mystery modifications. I would suggest you Google a T5 Transporter remap and you'll find that a remap only involves a few tweeks to the ECU. I spent over 40 years working in the motor trade and, being totally honest, have never come across such a stunt as you have pulled - ever. My customers trusted me. Can you say the same Stuart? Of course, there is another scenario that while I was asleep one night over the past year someone has decided to modify my van, welded this, taken off that and disconnected that just for the sake of it. What do you reckon? Your response is eagerly awaited. If there is no sensible reply I would say to everyone to avoid Whitings Garage.
